EDM measurement apparatus

A lattice-bound sample of cold atoms offers significant advantages for making precision measurements. Atoms can be trapped by light for tens of seconds without spontaneously scattering photons, allowing for extremely good frequency resolution. Furthermore, the perturbation due to the trap and to other atoms can be made minimal. We are currently constructing an apparatus to search for the electron electric dipole moment using ultra-cold, trapped Cs and Rb atoms. The projected statistical precision of this measurement is less than 5x10-30 e-cm, a factor of 200 times below the current measured limit. This experiment may discover fundamental physics beyond the Standard Model.
